The grove that introduced the world to giant sequoias — and promptly cut the biggest one down and turned its stump into a dance floor, an outrage that helped invent conservation.
01Why it's worth it
In 1852 a hunter stumbled into a grove of trees too large to be believed; within two years promoters had felled the "Discovery Tree" (it took five men 22 days), stripped another's bark for a traveling exhibit, and built a dance pavilion on the stump. The public reaction — John Muir later wrote about "the vandals then felled it" — became one of the founding arguments for protecting wild places, and this became one of California's first state parks. The stump is still there, quietly damning. As an experience it's the most reachable giant-sequoia fix from the Bay: the North Grove loop is an easy walk among monsters, and the South Grove, five miles deeper, holds the park's two largest trees at the end of a trail most visitors skip — a thousand-year-old forest nearly to yourself. Bay Area families also know it as the closest reliable snow-play that isn't a Tahoe traffic commitment ("do not even have to go to Tahoe — my first target would be Calaveras Big Trees"). It's not Sequoia NP — the groves are smaller and the drive is a real 2h45m. It earns the trip as Gold Country's anchor: pair it with Murphys (a good Gold Rush main street, 15 minutes down Hwy 4) or Columbia's preserved mining town.
02How to experience it
Highway 4 past Murphys to Arnold. North Grove + the Discovery Stump first; if the day allows, drive to the South Grove trailhead for the 5-mile round trip to the Agassiz Tree. Winter: chains and a sled.
