Yosemite has a twin — a second glacier-carved valley John Muir called a "wonderfully exact counterpart" — and San Francisco drowned it. What's left is the park's emptiest grand landscape.
01Why it's worth it
Hetch Hetchy Valley was, by every account, Yosemite Valley's sister: the same sheer granite, its own El Capitan-scale walls, its own waterfalls. The 1913 decision to dam it for San Francisco's water supply broke John Muir (he died a year later) and founded the modern environmental movement — the "restore Hetch Hetchy" argument is still live in every thread about it ("down with the dam, restore the sister valley"). The place today is a strange, moving hybrid: you walk across O'Shaughnessy Dam, through a granite tunnel, and along the reservoir's edge under walls that would be world famous if they weren't half-submerged, to Wapama Falls, which in spring crashes directly onto the footbridges you cross — "so underrated" is the standing verdict. It gets a fraction of one percent of the park's visitors. You will have a Yosemite-grade landscape essentially to yourself, plus the melancholy of knowing what's under the water — which is, honestly, part of the experience. This is also the closest grand Yosemite section to the Bay Area — no Valley traffic, a separate entrance off Evergreen Road, day-use gate hours. In spring, poison oak crowds the trail edges and the falls can close the footbridges with force; check conditions.
02How to experience it
Enter via Evergreen Rd off Hwy 120 just before the main park entrance (separate gate, day-use hours posted). Walk dam → tunnel → Wapama Falls (~5 mi round trip, rolling). Push on to Rancheria Falls if the day is cool. Bring more water than the mileage suggests — this is low, sunny country by Yosemite standards.
