The hook
One trailhead on Glacier Point Road serves both of Yosemite's best cheap thrills: a guardrail-free ledge hanging 3,000 feet over the Valley, and a bald dome with a 360° view that embarrasses Glacier Point itself.
01Why it's worth it
Glacier Point gets the buses; this loop, ten minutes back down the road, gets you better views for a five-mile walk. West: Taft Point, where the Valley rim simply stops — great granite fissures split the ledge, the drop to the floor is three thousand vertical feet, and the safety infrastructure is one small railing and your own judgment. It's the place photographers pose brides and everyone else lies on their stomach to look over. East: Sentinel Dome, a bare granite bump you walk straight up the back of, with a full-circle panorama — Half Dome, Yosemite Falls across the void, the high country rolling east — that many rate above Glacier Point because nothing man-made shares it with you. Do them as one loop along the rim and you get both extremes of the Yosemite feeling — vertigo and dominion — in an afternoon.
02How to experience it
Shared trailhead on Glacier Point Road (about 45 min from the Valley; road closed roughly Nov–May). Go counterclockwise — Taft first, sunset on Sentinel. Bring layers, real shoes, and take the fissures seriously: no fences, occasional fatalities, keep kids in hand. Pairs with a Glacier Point drive-by since you're there anyway.
