The hook
The best summit view in Yosemite isn't Half Dome — it's the peak a thousand feet above it, with no cables, no lottery, and a final ridge just narrow enough to make you earn it.
01Why it's worth it
Ask the subreddit for favorite hikes and Clouds Rest keeps winning — "my favorite hike of all time" is nearly a genre there (people propose marriage on this summit at a notable rate). The logic: Half Dome's famous view has one flaw, which is that Half Dome is in every direction except the one you came for. From Clouds Rest, 1,000 feet higher, Half Dome poses below you in profile with the entire Valley falling away behind it, Tenaya Canyon plunging 5,000 feet directly off your toes, and the high country wheeling around the rest of the circle. The approach from Tenaya Lake is a real but honest day — 13 miles, most of the climbing in the first half — and the finale is the famous ridge: a granite spine a few feet wide with big air on both sides, walkable by any steady adult and unforgettable to all of them. No permits, no cables, no circus. Just the better mountain.
02How to experience it
Trailhead at Tenaya Lake on Tioga Road (season: roughly June–October). Start by 7am — for cool climbing, summit light, and to be off the ridge before afternoon thunderstorms, which are not negotiable up there. Bring 3+ liters; the lake swim afterward is the built-in reward. If 13 miles oversteps, this is the one to train toward rather than substitute.
