The hook
A small mountain town in the Rif whose old medina is painted almost entirely in shades of blue, lane after lane of cobalt and powder-blue walls, steps, and doorways climbing the hillside.
01Why it's worth it
Chefchaouen is famous for one thing, and it delivers it: a whitewashed hill town whose old quarter has been painted in every shade of blue, creating a genuinely lovely, dreamlike maze of blue lanes, blue steps, blue doors, and flowerpots, tumbling down a slope in the Rif mountains. The honest caveat is that the all-blue look is not ancient tradition but a relatively recent, tourism-era development; the theories for why (a Jewish sky symbol, a mosquito deterrent, simply cooler and prettier) are all unproven, and the town has leaned into its Instagram fame, so the most photogenic corners draw crowds and posing photographers. Set that aside and it is still a charming, laid-back place: relaxed by Moroccan standards, cool and green in its mountain setting, with a pretty main square, good walking in the surrounding hills, and a mellow pace. Come early, wander without a map, and enjoy the colour.
02How to experience it
Wander the blue medina early in the morning before the crowds and the light gets harsh, and don't over-plan; the pleasure is aimless. Walk up to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint for sunset over the town, and hike in the Rif hills nearby. Enjoy the mellow pace as a break from the big cities.
From the locals
It turns up on every list of what worked, including from travellers who found the country hard going overall. One who spent six weeks and admitted "by the end I barely wanted to leave my accommodation" still named "Marrakech, Tangier, Chefchaouen, Merzouga, Agadir, Casablanca, Essaouira" as "all great." The same account flags the northern mountains as the underrated part: "the Akchour mountains are absolutely stunning, and so many cute waterfalls around."
