A near-abandoned medieval caravan town half-buried in the encroaching Sahara, where families still guard crumbling libraries of ancient hand-written manuscripts, once a great centre of learning on the road to Mecca.
01Why it's worth it
Chinguetti was, a thousand years ago, a thriving trans-Saharan trading and religious hub, a gathering point for pilgrims crossing the desert to Mecca and a renowned seat of Islamic scholarship, so revered that it is sometimes counted among the holy cities of Islam. Today it is a haunting place: a small, sand-swept town of dry-stone and mud houses, its old quarter partly reclaimed by the advancing dunes, dominated by an ancient minaret. Its treasure is intangible and fragile, several family-held libraries preserve collections of centuries-old manuscripts on the Quran, science, law, and mathematics, kept in simple rooms against the dust and time, which the keepers will carefully show visitors. Around it, the Adrar plateau offers classic Sahara: date-palm oases, dramatic escarpments, rock art, other old ksour like Ouadane, and vast dune fields. Mauritania is a demanding, little-visited destination, and parts have security concerns, so current advice matters, but for a genuine, unpolished Saharan experience, it is extraordinary.
02How to experience it
Reach Chinguetti and the Adrar with a local guide and 4x4, visiting the old town, a manuscript library or two, and the nearby oases and ksour like Ouadane, with time in the dunes. Go in the cooler months, dress and behave respectfully in this conservative Muslim region, and check current security advice before planning.
