01Why it's worth it
Churchill, a small town on the edge of the sub-Arctic tundra in northern Manitoba, reachable only by plane or a long train journey, offers three of the natural world's great spectacles. It is famous above all for polar bears: each autumn, as they wait for Hudson Bay to freeze so they can hunt seals, large numbers of the world's biggest land carnivore congregate around the town, and visitors watch them at close range from the safety of purpose-built "tundra buggies," a genuinely thrilling and increasingly poignant encounter as the bears' icy world warms. In summer, the picture transforms: thousands of beluga whales, small, white, and remarkably sociable, pour into the Churchill River estuary to feed and calve, and you can kayak, snorkel, or boat among them as they nuzzle right up to the craft. And because it lies beneath the auroral oval, Churchill is one of the best places on Earth to see the northern lights, which dance overhead on clear, cold nights much of the year. Add tundra hikes, birdlife, and the human history of a remote northern community, and Churchill delivers a rare trio of Arctic wonders in one small, memorable place.
02How to experience it
Match your visit to the wildlife: October-November for polar bears (in tundra buggies with expert operators), July-August for beluga whales (kayaking, boating, or snorkelling) and birds, and the dark cold months for aurora. Reach it by plane or the classic long train from Winnipeg, and go with the established local tour operators; it is remote and premium.
