Not the tallest waterfall, but one of the most powerful, a thundering, mile-wide horseshoe of green water hurling an astonishing volume over the edge in clouds of spray, best met head-on from a boat at its churning base.
01Why it's worth it
Niagara Falls is less about height than sheer force: straddling the Canada–US border, it is where the Niagara River, draining four of the Great Lakes, plunges over a curving escarpment, and the volume of water going over, especially at the broad Canadian Horseshoe Falls, is immense, among the highest flow rates of any waterfall on Earth, producing a permanent roar and a towering column of mist. The Canadian side has the best head-on views, looking straight into the great green curve of the Horseshoe, illuminated in colours at night and set off by fireworks in summer. The classic experience is the boat trip (the Maid of the Mist / Hornblower) that noses right into the base of the falls, where the spray drenches you and the power is overwhelming. The honest catch is the setting: the town around the falls is a garish strip of casinos, wax museums, and tourist kitsch that many find tacky. But the falls themselves genuinely deliver, and the surrounding Niagara region redeems the area with a pretty wine country and the charming town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Easily reached from Toronto, it remains a bucket-list sight for the raw power of falling water.
02How to experience it
See the Horseshoe Falls head-on from the Canadian promenade (lovely when lit at night), and take the boat trip into the base for the full drenching power. Escape the tacky town strip to the Niagara wine country and the pretty town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. It is an easy day trip or overnight from Toronto.
