The oldest lake in North America — holding water continuously for something like half a million years — sits two hours north of the bay under a dormant volcano, and almost nobody from the Bay Area has been.
01Why it's worth it
Clear Lake predates the Great Basin's ice-age lakes by an order of magnitude: sediment cores show unbroken lake conditions going back at least 480,000 years, which makes it the continent's oldest lake and one of the oldest on Earth. That age built an ecosystem — the thickest bass fishery in the West (national tournaments treat it as holy water), winter bald eagles, tule shores the Pomo people worked for millennia (Anderson Marsh preserves village sites and the story). Mount Konocti, the volcano on its southern shore, opened to the public only in 2011 after a century closed; the summit road-trail earns a full lake panorama. The county is California's overlooked corner — poor, rough-edged, unfashionable — and the honesty is that summer algae blooms can foul the water and the towns are working towns, not resort ones. Go in the clear seasons and the oldest lake gives you an unfashionable, uncrowded, genuinely deep day.
02How to experience it
Highway 29 through the Napa Valley and over the hill — the drive itself explains why Lake County stayed apart. Clear Lake State Park (Soda Bay) for the shoreline and swimming, Anderson Marsh SHP for the Pomo history, and the Mount Konocti trail (check county access rules) for the summit.
