01Why it's worth it
Esalen is a famous retreat institute, but its natural hot springs, bolted to a cliff directly above the ocean, open to the public through one narrow window: night bathing, 1am to 3am, by reservation, about twenty people. You soak in stone and concrete tubs of 104-to-120-degree spring water, indoor and out, with a shower behind a glass wall hanging over the surf, while the waves break in the dark below. It's clothing-optional and pointedly unhurried, a quiet ritual rather than a spa. Getting a spot and driving Highway 1 in the dark to make a 1am soak is a strange, memorable thing in itself, which is most of the appeal.
02How to experience it
Reserve ahead on Esalen's website; the public window is 1am to 3am and the roughly twenty spots go fast. It's about 12 miles south of Big Sur town. Expect a quiet side and a silent side, clothing optional, towels provided. Do not just show up without a booking.
