The hook
A working Benedictine monastery on a ridge two miles up a private road, where you can buy honey the monks made and just sit with the quiet.
01Why it's worth it
Two monks from Camaldoli in Tuscany spent years looking for a place that combined solitude and beauty and landed here in 1958. Day visitors are welcome: you can walk the grounds, sit in the chapel, take in a ridge view that runs to the ocean, and browse a bookstore stocked with the monks' own creamed honey and fruitcake alongside Merton and Nouwen. It asks nothing of you, which after the Highway 1 traffic is the whole point. If it grabs you, they take overnight retreat guests in simple rooms and cottages, two-night minimum, meals included.
02How to experience it
It's up a steep private drive off Highway 1; go slow and be respectful, this is someone's home and practice. Come for the quiet, not a photo. For an overnight, book ahead; the self-guided silent retreat is the real version.
From the locals
The tell is who complains about noise here: someone whose "blissful ocean waves and solitude" got interrupted by distant wedding music near the hermitage. People come here specifically for the silence.
