A backpacking route from the edge of the highway to the tallest coastal mountain in the lower 48, and a redwood camp one local calls the best on the planet.
01Why it's worth it
The trail leaves Kirk Creek Campground and climbs the hillside above the coast, so for the first few miles you're walking with the whole Big Sur shoreline dropping away below you. Then it turns inland into Hare Canyon and lands at Vicente Flat, a camp under old-growth redwoods with a creek through the middle. From there it's a day hike to Cone Peak, which rises 5,155 feet just three miles from the ocean above one of the deepest canyons in the country. Big Sur has no backpacking permits or quotas, so the logistics are unusually easy. The trail is not: it's narrow, overgrown, and notorious for ticks and poison oak, so treat your clothes with permethrin and wear long sleeves.
02How to experience it
Most people do it in three days, camping two nights at Vicente Flat with a Cone Peak summit day in between. Spring has the most water and green.
