01Why it's worth it
Big Sur is almost all cliff with no way down to the water, which makes Sand Dollar, the longest walkable beach on the whole coast, a genuine rarity: a place to actually spread out. Two miles south, Jade Cove sits over the largest underwater nephrite jade deposit in the world, and the law lets you keep whatever loose jade you can carry out by hand from below the high-tide line. People comb the surf here after storms for green stones. It's two stops in one: a wide beach where you can finally breathe, and a treasure hunt with actual treasure.
02How to experience it
Sand Dollar has an easy path down. Jade Cove is a short but steep scramble from the Plaskett Creek area that ends in a rope-assisted drop to the rocks, so go at low tide, and after a winter storm for the best hunting. Only take loose jade from below the high-tide line; prying it off the rock is off-limits.
