The hook

The heart of Finland is water: thousands of lakes threaded with forest and islands, where the national ritual is a lakeside cabin, a wood-fired sauna, and a jump into cold water.

01Why it's worth it

Finland is one of the most lake-covered countries on earth, and the Lakeland is its centre, a soft, low landscape of interlocking lakes, pine, and birch where the summer culture is the mökki, the lakeside cottage. The rhythm is simple and deeply Finnish: heat the sauna, sweat, run out and plunge into the lake, repeat, then sit in the long light as the water goes still. At Savonlinna, the medieval island castle of Olavinlinna sits in the lake and hosts a renowned opera festival in its stone courtyard each summer. There are no dramatic mountains or coasts here; the appeal is calm, water, and quiet, done properly.

02How to experience it

Rent a lakeside cabin with its own sauna and dock, and let the days go slow: swim, paddle, sauna, repeat. See Olavinlinna castle at Savonlinna, and time it for the summer opera if that appeals. Come in summer; outside it the cottages close and the lakes freeze.
