01Why it's worth it
Goa is a genuine hybrid, four centuries as a Portuguese colony left it with baroque cathedrals (the UNESCO-listed churches of Old Goa), whitewashed villages, Catholic feasts, and a Konkan-Portuguese cuisine of vindaloo, xacuti, and fresh seafood that stands apart from the rest of India. But the honest truth is that its fame is also its problem: the north (Baga, Calangute) is developed, crowded, and boozy, exactly the "Tier-1 overcrowded" reputation Indian travellers warn about. The reward is knowing where to go, the quieter south (Palolem, Agonda), the spice farms and old churches inland, the Saturday night markets, and the slower river-and-village Goa away from the sand. Come in season for the weather and out of it for the calm; either way it's a change of pace as much as a place.
02How to experience it
Split your time: a day or two for Old Goa's churches and a spice plantation, then pick your beach by mood, the lively north or the mellow south (Palolem, Agonda, Patnem). Rent a scooter for the village lanes, eat the seafood and the Goan pork, and consider the shoulder season for fewer crowds. It's an easy flight or the scenic Konkan Railway from Mumbai.

Indians love it and warn about it in the same breath: sorting destinations by crowd, one flagged that "Tier-1 are over-crowded places like Goa, Agra," the nudge being to time it well and seek out the quieter south rather than the packed northern strip.
