The hook
Two of the greatest works of rock-cut architecture on earth: at Ajanta, a cliff of Buddhist cave-temples with 2,000-year-old murals; at Ellora, a temple the size of a cathedral carved top-down from a single hill of solid basalt.
01Why it's worth it
These twin UNESCO sites in Maharashtra's Deccan are a stunning pairing. Ajanta is the older, some 30 Buddhist prayer halls and monasteries cut into a horseshoe river gorge between the 2nd century BCE and the 5th CE, their walls covered in exquisite, still-vivid paintings of the Buddha's lives, among the finest surviving ancient art in Asia, "lost" to the jungle until a British hunting party stumbled on them in 1819. Ellora is the greater feat of engineering: 34 caves of three faiths side by side, Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain, crowned by the Kailasa temple, a full-size Hindu temple carved downward and inward out of one basalt cliff, moving an estimated 200,000 tonnes of rock, without any of the usual bottom-up construction. Standing inside something excavated rather than built, at that scale, is genuinely hard to take in. They're less visited by foreign travellers than the Taj-Jaipur circuit, which they easily rival.
02How to experience it
Base in Aurangabad (now Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) and give each site its own day, they're an hour or so apart and closed on different days (Ajanta Mondays, Ellora Tuesdays). Go early for the light and the quiet, bring a torch for Ajanta's murals, and don't rush the Kailasa temple at Ellora, it deserves an hour on its own. Cooler months are far more comfortable.
