A salt marsh the size of a small country that dries each winter into a dead-flat, blinding-white plain stretching to the horizon, best under a full moon, when the salt glows and the line between ground and sky disappears.
01Why it's worth it
The Great Rann of Kutch, in far-western Gujarat on the Pakistan border, is one of the largest salt deserts on earth: flooded in the monsoon, it dries through the winter into an endless white crust that, near a full moon, becomes genuinely surreal, silver, silent, and horizonless. Around this emptiness lives one of India's richest craft cultures: the villages of Kutch are famous for mirror-work embroidery, bandhani tie-dye, block printing, leather, and bell-making, and you can visit artisans in their hamlets. The old walled town of Bhuj is the gateway, and the desert also shelters wild asses and flamingos in its wetter reaches. The government's winter "Rann Utsav" tent city makes it easy but busy; going independently to the salt flats for sunset and moonrise is the quieter, more affecting way.
02How to experience it
Base in Bhuj and drive out to the White Rann at Dhordo for sunset and, ideally, a full-moon night when the salt glows. Spend a day village-hopping the Kutch craft hamlets (Nirona, Ajrakhpur, Hodka) to meet the artisans, and look for flamingos and wild asses in the Little Rann. Come November to February, this is strictly a dry-season place.

It stops road-trippers in their tracks: crossing Gujarat by motorbike, one rider wrote of "the surreal beauty of Rann of Kutch and then road to heaven" leaving him "speechless," the white desert the highlight of the whole ride.
