A city of golden sandstone rising out of the Thar Desert, crowned by one of the world's few forts people still live inside, its lanes glowing amber at sunset and its edge opening onto empty dunes and some of India's darkest skies.
01Why it's worth it
Jaisalmer, the "Golden City," was a caravan town on the old routes between India and Central Asia, and its wealth is written in stone: honey-coloured havelis (merchant mansions) carved as fine as lace, and above them the great Jaisalmer Fort, not a museum but a living quarter where families, shops, and guesthouses still fill the ramparts. It sits far out in Rajasthan's western desert, well beyond the busier Jaipur–Udaipur circuit, so it trades polish for atmosphere. The desert itself is the other half of the trip: camel safaris out to the dunes at Sam or Khuri, a night in the open, and, because you are hours from any large city, a sky thick with stars. It gets hot and dusty, and the fort's popularity strains its old drains, but the sense of a frontier city on the sand is rare.
02How to experience it
Wander the fort's living lanes and the carved havelis (Patwon Ki Haveli), catch sunset from the ramparts when the stone turns gold, then head out for a desert night, a camel ride to the dunes and a camp under the stars. Come November to February to escape the desert heat, and keep a day loose for the slow pace.

Indian travellers rate it for something the guidebooks undersell, the sky: asked for the country's most underrated stargazing spot, one made the case for Jaisalmer flatly, and another backed it, "it is one of the top 5 places in India where you can stargaze," the payoff of a fort city sitting alone at the desert's edge.
