Thailand's north-east, a third of the country and closer to Laos than to Bangkok in language, food, and music, where the Mekong runs along the border past small towns, and Khmer temples older than Angkor's peak sit on volcanic hills.
01Why it's worth it
Isaan is the part of Thailand that mass tourism never reached, and it's not because there's nothing there. The region has its own language (close to Lao), its own food, som tam, sticky rice, grilled chicken, fermented fish, spicier and sourer than central Thai cooking, and its own music: mor lam, a fast, twangy, khaen-driven style that fills village festivals and long-distance buses. Along the northern edge the Mekong sets the pace, with river towns like Chiang Khan and Nong Khai, sunrise over Laos, and the strange sculpture parks of Sala Kaew Ku. In the south, Khmer sanctuaries at Phanom Rung and Phimai are superb, built by the same empire as Angkor Wat and almost empty of visitors. Add rocket festivals, candle processions, and prices well below the coast. What Isaan does not have is beaches or polish; it's a place to travel slowly and be the only foreigner in the room.
02How to experience it
Pick a corridor rather than the whole region: the Mekong (Nong Khai, Chiang Khan, Nakhon Phanom) for river towns and sunsets, or the south (Buriram, Phimai) for Khmer temples. Take the train from Bangkok, eat at markets, and time your visit to a festival if you can. Cool season is best; the hot months here are genuinely fierce.
From the locals
The steer comes with an argument for going slow: "check out Isaan to get off the beaten track," one wrote, describing "the slow life" — and then made the case that actually persuades: "the music, mor lam, is phenomenal, very groovy."
Chiang Khan is the region's flashpoint, and worth singling out because the argument about it is instructive. It appears on the list of places "somewhat popular amongst Thais, but not so much farang" — alongside Chao Lao, Sangkhla Buri, Khanom and Songkhla — and again among the "great local tourist places" where "the people are absolutely lovely in Isan."
Then a 2025 post titled "Y'all are sleeping on Chiang Khan" produced almost no description and a great deal of protest. One reply asked people to keep it that way — "Keep it that way by not posting it on reddit for thousands to see… normalize gatekeeping because vloggers are already doing enough damage these days." Another was blunter: "No, please no more people there, its already packed on high season, very chill on low season, perfect as it is."
That last comment contains the only advice anyone actually needs: go in low season. The high-season complaint and the low-season endorsement are the same sentence.
What the town is like, when someone does describe it, is this: "I was with gf in Chiang Khan recently, and as we're walking around, a woman invited us to eat dinner with her family. My gf explained it's just their way to say hello to strangers, you're not supposed to accept, it's just etiquette." That is Isaan in one exchange — and the reason the people who go there are protective of it.
