The hook
762 curves of mountain road north-west of Chiang Mai, ridden on a rented scooter past waterfalls, hot springs and hill villages, ending in a small valley town that people arrive at for two days and leave after ten.
01Why it's worth it
The ride is the attraction. The Mae Hong Son loop climbs out of Chiang Mai into forested mountains on a road famous for its bend count, and the riding itself, cool air, long views, near-empty tarmac, is what travellers remember rather than any single stop. Pai sits partway round: a valley town with a walking-street night market, riverside bamboo bungalows, hot springs, a canyon of narrow eroded ridges best at sunset, and waterfalls you can swim under. It has been a backpacker fixture for two decades, so it is unmistakably that, banana pancakes and reggae bars, and whether that reads as charm or cliché is personal. Around it the province is genuinely rural, with Shan and Karen villages, caves at Tham Lod, and the quieter town of Mae Hong Son itself.
Two honest cautions. The road is where inexperienced riders get hurt; hire from a reputable shop, check your insurance actually covers motorbikes, and wear the helmet. And in March–April agricultural burning fills the northern valleys with smoke thick enough to erase the views entirely.
02How to experience it
Rent a scooter in Chiang Mai and ride the loop over three or four days rather than shuttling straight to Pai, the villages, caves and passes between are the point. Or take the minibus if you don't ride (it's winding; motion sickness is common). Stay in Pai longer than you planned, and go November to February.

"Most fun thing you can do is meet some people and all rent scooters in Chiang Mai and ride up the mountains to Pai. Then ride around the mountains while you are there, visiting waterfalls, the canyon — and my favourite was just riding and getting lost."
