The hook

The green heart of Gabon: a vast tract of pristine equatorial rainforest hiding thundering waterfalls and a legendary forest clearing where elephants, gorillas, and buffalo gather in the open, deep in one of the wildest places on Earth.

01Why it's worth it

Gabon sits in the Congo Basin, and around ninety percent of the country is still forested, an astonishing figure that makes it one of the last strongholds of pristine equatorial rainforest, and Ivindo National Park in the interior showcases it at its purest. The park protects dense jungle threaded by rivers that plunge over spectacular waterfalls, chief among them Kongou Falls, a wide, powerful cascade deep in the forest. Its crown jewel is Langoué Bai, a natural forest clearing "discovered" for science only in the early 2000s, where, from a viewing platform, patient visitors can watch the shy giants of the rainforest, forest elephants, western lowland gorillas, buffalo, and sitatunga antelope, come out into the open to feed on the mineral-rich mud and vegetation, one of the most magical wildlife experiences in central Africa. Reaching this deep interior is a genuine expedition, remote and premium, but it offers an immersion in a wilderness that has scarcely changed in millennia and that Gabon has made a global model for protecting. For the intrepid, it is the essence of the wild Congo Basin.

02How to experience it

Reach the interior via Gabon's forest railway and onward transfers or light aircraft, and go with guides to Ivindo's waterfalls and, above all, to the Langoué Bai platform to watch forest elephants and gorillas in the clearing, which rewards patience. It is remote, premium, and physically demanding; go in the drier season and support the conservation model.
