01Why it's worth it
Odzala-Kokoua, in the northern Republic of the Congo, is one of the finest and most accessible windows into the Congo Basin, the vast rainforest that blankets central Africa and forms the planet's second-largest, a critical store of biodiversity and carbon. Unlike the mountain gorillas of the east, the great apes here are western lowland gorillas, and habituated groups can be tracked on foot through the dense forest, a thrilling, sweaty jungle encounter. The park's other magic is its bais, natural forest clearings and marshy openings where wildlife concentrates: from raised platforms you can watch forest elephants, buffalo, gorillas, and other creatures emerge from the trees to feed and drink, a rare chance to see the shy denizens of the rainforest in the open.
