The hook

The last wild giraffes in all of West Africa, a small, recovering herd of a pale, distinctive subspecies that roams freely among the villages and fields near Niger's capital, saved from the brink of extinction.

01Why it's worth it

The West African giraffe, a paler-patterned subspecies, once ranged across the region, but hunting and habitat loss wiped it out everywhere except a single small population near Kouré, southeast of Niamey, which by the 1990s had crashed to just a few dozen animals. A determined conservation effort, working closely with local communities who share their land with the animals, has brought the herd back to several hundred, a genuine and heartening success story. Uniquely, these giraffes are not in a fenced park but roam free in the bush and farmland, coexisting with the people who live there, so seeing them means driving out with a local guide to find the herd browsing among the trees, often remarkably close, an intimate and unusual wildlife encounter that directly supports the community-based conservation keeping them alive. It is one of the few genuine wildlife draws in the Sahel, and a powerful example of people and endangered animals sharing a landscape. Niger's security situation is difficult, so current advice must be checked before any visit.

02How to experience it

Check current security advice for Niger first. When feasible, take a guided drive from Niamey out to the Kouré area with an official local guide to track the free-roaming giraffes, ideally in the cooler morning; the fees support the community conservation programme that protects them. Keep a respectful distance.
