01Why it's worth it
Kyiv is one of the oldest and most important cities in Eastern Europe, the seat from which Orthodox Christianity spread across the region more than a thousand years ago. Its heights above the Dnipro river are crowned with gold: the cave monastery of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, the ancient St Sophia cathedral with its Byzantine mosaics, and St Michael's blue-and-gold walls. The city was also the stage for the 2014 Maidan revolution, and since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022 it has been a wartime capital under threat, a fact that cannot be separated from any honest picture of it now. This entry records what the city is and holds, not an invitation to visit while it is under fire. Travel to Ukraine is currently unsafe and restricted, and the right way to engage with Kyiv today is through support for the people defending it.
02How to experience it
Not now. Ukraine is at war, and this is here as context and for a peaceful future, not as a travel suggestion. When the time comes, the gold-domed monasteries above the Dnipro and the layered thousand-year history are the heart of it. For the present, the meaningful action is supporting Ukraine and its people.
