A serene old royal town on a finger of land between the Mekong and a tributary, full of gilded temples and French-colonial villas, where at dawn lines of barefoot monks collect alms through the mist.
01Why it's worth it
Luang Prabang was the royal and religious capital of Laos, and its compact old town, wrapped around a peninsula where two rivers meet, is one of the loveliest in Southeast Asia: dozens of active Buddhist temples with sweeping tiled roofs, shaded lanes of French-era shophouses and villas, and monasteries full of orange-robed novices. Each morning before dawn, monks file silently through the streets to receive rice and food from kneeling residents, a genuine devotional ritual that has, sadly, become something of a tourist spectacle and is best observed from a respectful distance or not at all. Beyond the town, the turquoise tiers of the Kuang Si waterfall, the slow brown Mekong, caves, and hill villages fill out an unhurried few days. The whole place runs at a gentle, almost sleepy pace that is its chief charm.
02How to experience it
Temple-hop the peninsula, climb Phou Si hill at sunset, and take a Mekong boat to the Pak Ou caves. Cool off at the Kuang Si falls. If you watch the dawn alms-giving, do so quietly from afar without flash or blocking the monks; better still, simply let it be. Settle into the slow pace.

Repeat visitors are unusually protective of it: "Luang Prabang is one of the most beautiful towns in Southeast Asia," one wrote. "Unlike many tourism hotspots, it seems like they've done a really good job with it. I was first there in 2002 and went back in 2003, 2008, and 2018, and loved it a little more every time." Others frame it by comparison: it's "the main tourist town, such as it is, and yet it's still fairly quiet compared to places in Cambodia or Thailand. Very laid back."
