A steep river canyon with an emerald reservoir at the bottom, cliffside medieval monasteries, and a boat ride to a cave said to be one of the deepest underwater caves in the world, all half an hour from the capital.
01Why it's worth it
Just outside Skopje, the Treska river cuts a dramatic gorge, dammed a century ago into a narrow green lake walled by cliffs. A footpath runs along the water past small medieval monasteries and churches tucked into the rock, and little boats take visitors up the canyon to Vrelo cave, whose flooded lower section divers have probed to great depth without yet finding the bottom. You can kayak the still water, hike up to clifftop chapels, or just walk the shoreline path and eat at the restaurant by the dam. It is an easy, refreshing escape from the city rather than a wilderness, and its combination of canyon, water, caves, and monasteries in a small space is what makes it worth the short trip.
02How to experience it
Come early from Skopje to beat the crowds, walk the shoreline path to the monasteries, and take the boat to Vrelo cave. Rent a kayak if you want the water to yourself. It is a half-day paired naturally with the city.
