A stone-tower village at the end of a rough road deep in the Accursed Mountains, where families ran on ancient clan law and blood feud, now the start of one of the Balkans' finest mountain hikes.
01Why it's worth it
The far north of Albania holds the Prokletije, the "Accursed Mountains," a wall of sharp limestone peaks shared with Montenegro and Kosovo, and Theth sits deep inside them in a green valley of waterfalls, a church, and old stone houses. Among them are kulla, fortified tower houses built for a harsh reason: this region long lived by the Kanun, an ancient code that governed everything including blood feuds, and families under threat could shut themselves in the towers. That history is present but no longer lived. Today Theth's draw is the mountains: the day hike over a high pass to the neighbouring valley of Valbona is a classic, staying in family guesthouses at either end, and shorter walks reach the Blue Eye spring and a dramatic waterfall. It is remote, simple, and increasingly loved, so the valley is busier each year but still raw.
02How to experience it
Come in summer, when the road and passes are open, and walk the Theth-to-Valbona traverse over the pass, sleeping in village guesthouses and eating what the family cooks. Shorter walks reach the waterfall and the Blue Eye. Expect basic comforts and spectacular mountains.
