The hook
A hundred-year-old eucalyptus cloud forest hidden in the dead center of San Francisco, best on the exact foggy days everyone else avoids.
01Why it's worth it
Eighty acres of eucalyptus up to two hundred feet tall cover the hill above the medical center, planted in the 1800s and left to grow into a proper forest. A couple of minutes up the trail and the city vanishes; on a foggy morning the mist wraps the treetops and it turns into a genuine cloud forest, cool and dripping while the rest of town bakes. It's the fastest way to feel completely out of San Francisco without leaving it. Pair it with Tank Hill next door, an unremarkable little knob with a 360-degree view where locals go to watch the fog pour in under the Golden Gate at sunset.
02How to experience it
Enter from the Stanyan or Medical Center trailheads and loop the summit, then drop down to Tank Hill for the view. Go on a grey, drippy morning; the fog is the feature here, not a thing to wait out.
03Skip the cliché
Skip the tour-bus scrum at Twin Peaks a few blocks away. Tank Hill has the same sweep with a fraction of the people, and Sutro's forest is something Twin Peaks can't offer at all.
