A staircase in the far avenues that a whole neighborhood turned into a single sea-to-sky mosaic, and almost no visitor makes it out here.
01Why it's worth it
Residents in Golden Gate Heights spent years covering an ordinary flight of steps in what Fodor's calls maybe the largest mosaic staircase in the world: 163 steps rising ninety feet, more than two thousand handmade tiles building a scene from sea creatures at the bottom up through land animals and birds to a sun and moon at the top. It was inspired by the painted steps in Rio, designed by two local artists and laid by the neighborhood, and it climbs to Grandview Park, a small sandy summit with one of the best quiet views in the city. It's out past where tourists go, with no crowd and no fee.
02How to experience it
Take the N-Judah to 16th and Judah and walk up. Go early, because it's a residential block: keep it quiet, don't block driveways, and be off it by evening. Then keep climbing past the top to Grandview Park — "Turtle Hill" to the neighborhood, which locals argue "pretty much rivals Twin Peaks" — for the payoff view.
