01Why it's worth it
Pacific Grove is the unpolished alternative to its famous neighbors, and it's built for wandering. A coastal trail runs the rocky shore from Lovers Point, where the beach faces east so you can actually watch the sun come up over the water, out to Point Pinos and the oldest working lighthouse on the West Coast. Inland, Lighthouse Avenue is a few walkable blocks of preserved Victorians, cafes, and antique shops without Carmel's outdoor-mall gloss. And from mid-October into February, tens of thousands of monarch butterflies pile into one small grove of trees in the middle of town. None of it is a headline sight; the point is to spend an afternoon on foot.
02How to experience it
Walk or bike the recreation trail from Lovers Point toward Point Pinos, then drift up to Lighthouse Avenue for a coffee and the shops. In winter, find the Monarch Grove Sanctuary off Ridge Road. It's free, but don't touch a butterfly; the fine is $1,000.
