01Why it's worth it
From outside it's a barn at a country crossroads. Inside, the San Gregorio General Store has run since 1889 and never picked a lane: it's a full bar, a bookstore, a hardware-and-clothing shop, and a music venue all at once, with a potbelly stove, cowboy hats and skillets for sale, and live bluegrass and blues every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Ranchers, locals, and cyclists coming off the hills all end up leaning on the same bar. It's a genuine one-off, the kind of place that feels unbothered by the last hundred years, a mile inland from the beach it's named for.
02How to experience it
Come on a weekend afternoon when the music's on, order a Bloody Mary, and browse the gloriously random merchandise. It's the classic regroup stop for anyone riding over Highway 84 to the coast; the beach is a mile west if you want to pair them.
