01Why it's worth it
On the slope above South San Francisco, sixty-foot concrete letters spell out "SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO THE INDUSTRIAL CITY," a civic boast laid down in the 1920s and now a protected landmark, the town's own unironic answer to the Hollywood sign. A steep park trail climbs past and above the letters, and from the top you get a wide view over the bayside flats, the port, and the planes dropping into SFO. It's part earnest small-city pride, part accidental oddity: a place that decided to write its blue-collar identity across a mountain and never took it down. The letters and the view are the payoff; the climb is short but steep.
02How to experience it
Start from the Sign Hill Park trailheads in South San Francisco and climb the steep trail up past the letters to the ridge. Go on a clear day for the view, and take it slow; it's a real little workout for its length.
