01Why it's worth it
Turin is the great Italian city that visitors skip, and Italians find that baffling. It is grand in a distinctly un-Tuscan way, straight boulevards, French-influenced palaces, glass-roofed galleries, and porticoes that let you cross the centre in the rain without an umbrella. The Museo Egizio is the headline: a genuinely world-class Egyptian museum, statues, papyri, and whole tomb assemblages, second only to Cairo's. Add the Mole Antonelliana with its superb National Cinema Museum and a lift to a city-wide view, the royal palaces, and the Alps closing the western horizon on clear days. It is also a food city with real specificity: chocolate (gianduja was invented here), vermouth, Piedmontese wine an hour away in the Langhe, and a generous aperitivo culture where a drink buys you a spread. Industrial history (Fiat, the Lingotto rooftop test track) runs beneath it all.
02How to experience it
Give the Museo Egizio a proper half day. Ride the Mole's lift at dusk, walk the arcades and the historic cafés (Al Bicerin for the coffee-chocolate-cream bicerin), and stake out an aperitivo before dinner. Add Superga or the Valentino park for the hill views, and day-trip to the Langhe for Barolo. Autumn brings truffles and the clearest mountain light.
