01Why it's worth it
Uvas Canyon is a rain-chaser's park: Swanson Creek drops through a dark, mossy canyon in a series of named falls — Black Rock, Basin, Upper Falls — all threaded by the short Waterfall Loop, so the payoff-per-step after a storm is the best in the South Bay. Locals keep it on the favorites shelf ("I'm partial to Uvas Canyon") with the standing caveat that it's seasonal truth-in-advertising: by June the falls are trickles and the magic sleeps until the next atmospheric river. The county's day-use reservation requirement (a response to it getting loved half to death) is now part of the appeal — book a slot and the canyon stays quiet even on a perfect post-storm Saturday. The drive in past Uvas Reservoir and the tiny Croatian-founded Sveadal colony is its own bit of hidden South Bay.
02How to experience it
Reserve online before driving (enforced), then Uvas Rd out of Morgan Hill to the end of Croy Rd. Do the Waterfall Loop slowly, extend up Alec Canyon for the overlook and Triple Falls if the legs want more. Go within 48 hours of real rain — that's the entire trick. Redwood shade makes it a decent summer picnic canyon too, just don't promise anyone waterfalls.
