← Port Renfrew forest accountability

For campaign groups

This site watches the Forest Operations Map across Port Renfrew, Lake Cowichan, Nitinat, Alberni Valley, Sooke, Campbell River, and Gold River and turns it into an early-warning system. Every proposed block is listed with its real public comment deadline, ranked by what it touches: mapped old growth, areas the province's 2021 panel recommended deferring, and fish records. The data refreshes weekly from official public datasets, and every figure links back to its source.

Plug it into your workflow

Deadline alerts. The alerts page lists every open comment window, soonest first, and each area has an RSS feed. For email, copy a feed link below and paste it into blogtrottr.com (free) with an address; each new window then lands in your inbox.

The maps. The whole-Island map shows every proposed block across all areas at once; each area also has a full layered map with old growth, streams, roads, and recorded harvest.

Every block, filterable. Browse filters proposed blocks by area, comment status, and value at risk. Recently posted surfaces the newest FOM records, the ones most likely to still have a window coming.

Ready-made comments. The comment assistant drafts a records-focused comment for every block with an open window, so supporters can copy, edit, and submit in a few minutes.

The data itself. Downloads include each area's proposed-logging watch and its records-gap register as CSV, free to reuse. The register pairs every recent high-risk block with the site-level records the public cannot see for it, ready to turn into a targeted records request.

Share graphics for social posts. Square, ready to attach to a community-group post: the 30-day window, the deferral finding, and 2275. Free to use.

Print posters for community boards. One letter-size sheet per area, black and white printer friendly, with a QR code to the live list: Port Renfrew · Lake Cowichan · Nitinat · Alberni Valley · Sooke · Campbell River · Gold River. The counts are printed with their date; the deadlines stay live on the site.

Embed the deadline list on your own site. A compact live list of open comment windows (preview) can be dropped into any page as an iframe; it updates whenever the data refreshes. Dark by default; add ?theme=light for light pages.

Before you rely on it

This is an independent project, not an official source. Deadlines come from the FOM API and the FOM project page stays authoritative. Overlap and proximity figures are screening results: reasons to look and to comment, not proof of harm. The landing page shows the current data date, and every time-sensitive page warns visibly if its data is more than 10 days old. Methods and provenance: sources, the full report.

Want an area added?

The pipeline is reusable: covering a new Vancouver Island area takes a bounding box and a short setup, not a rebuild. If your campaign needs an area covered, a walkthrough for your team, or a custom cut of the data, email aaronevans.eng@outlook.com. If you use the data, a link back helps others find it.
