01Why it's worth it
Just south of Half Moon Bay, the Cowell-Purisima Trail traces about four miles of open cliff top between farm fields and a long drop to the surf, with a staircase down to Cowell Ranch Beach, a tucked-away crescent of sand you'd never spot from the highway. It's flat, wide, and largely empty, so you get the drama of the Highway 1 coast, cliffs, seabirds, whales offshore in season, without the crowds or the climbing. It's the kind of unhurried, horizontal coast walk that's easy to overlook next to the marquee stops, and it doubles as a gentle gravel ride. The working artichoke and Brussels-sprout fields alongside are part of the scene.
02How to experience it
Park at the Cowell Ranch Beach lot off Highway 1 south of Half Moon Bay and walk or ride the flat bluff trail; take the staircase down to the pocket beach at low tide. Clear days give whales and long views; it's a mellow out-and-back at whatever length you like.
