The hook
A deep redwood canyon on the coast side of Skyline that most people blow past on the way to the beach, with trails from flat creek walks to a lung-busting climb.
01Why it's worth it
Tucked into the fog belt between Skyline and Half Moon Bay, Purisima Creek carves a shaded canyon full of second-growth redwoods, ferns, and running water. You can take it easy on the lower creekside trail, a nearly flat walk under big trees along the water, or grind the whole canyon from bottom to Skyline and back for real elevation. Because it's off the main tourist track and shares the coast with more famous names, it stays quiet even on weekends. It's the redwood option for this stretch of coast: less crowded than the marquee state parks, and a lovely place to be under trees for an hour or a day.
02How to experience it
For the easy version, start at the Higgins-Purisima entrance near Half Moon Bay and walk the lower creek trail out and back. For the workout, drop in from the Skyline side and climb back up. Go on a weekday and after rain, when the creek's running and the ferns are wet.
