The hook
The birthplace of mariachi, tequila, and the wide-brimmed charro hat, which is to say the place most of what the world pictures as "Mexican" actually comes from, with a colonial core, a fierce muralist tradition, and agave fields an hour out of town.
01Why it's worth it
Guadalajara gets skipped because visitors fly over it to the beach, and Mexicans find that a shame. The centre is a run of grand plazas around a twin-spired cathedral, and inside the Hospicio Cabañas, a UNESCO-listed former orphanage, José Clemente Orozco painted The Man of Fire across the dome, one of the great murals of the Americas. Mariachi was born in this region and still plays properly in the Plaza de los Mariachis and in old cantinas. The suburb of Tlaquepaque is a centre for ceramics and crafts, Tonalá for markets. And the town of Tequila, with the blue agave landscape around it also UNESCO-listed, is a straightforward day trip by road or on the tourist train, where you see the plant harvested and the spirit made where the name comes from. The food is regional and specific: birria, tortas ahogadas drowned in chilli sauce. It is a big working city, so it has a big city's rough edges and traffic; the centre and the western neighbourhoods are where visitors spend time.
02How to experience it
Two or three days: the cathedral, plazas, and the Orozco murals at Hospicio Cabañas; an evening of mariachi and a cantina; a day in Tlaquepaque for crafts; and a day out to Tequila for the agave fields and a distillery. Eat birria for breakfast and a torta ahogada at least once. Normal big-city awareness applies.

The case gets made on its own thread, "Guadalajara is underrated", with residents and visitors agreeing the beach traffic passes it by: "most Americans go to Mexico for the beach," one wrote, noting Vallarta pulls people away, "best case scenario, they take a tour to Guadalajara from Vallarta." Others push back on its reputation directly: "not secure? I didn't wander far from the centro except the zoo, but it felt okay to me. Perhaps there are bad areas like any other city."
