The hook
A silver-boom city wedged into a narrow ravine at 2,400 metres, built entirely from pink cantera stone, with one of the most extravagant baroque cathedral façades in the Americas and a cable car running over the rooftops to the hill above.
01Why it's worth it
Zacatecas made Spain rich, and it spent the proceeds on stone. The result is a UNESCO-listed centre of pink-hued mansions, plazas, and churches, crowned by a cathedral whose façade is carved into a dense, almost vegetal frenzy of saints and columns, arguably the finest Churrigueresque work anywhere. You can descend into the Edén mine that funded it all, ride a teleférico across the ravine to the Cerro de la Bufa for the view over the whole rose-coloured city, and visit an unexpectedly superb modern art museum, the Rafael Coronel's thousands of masks and the Pedro Coronel's Picassos and Mirós. It sits high and dry, so nights are cold and the light is sharp. The honest note travellers themselves raise: Zacatecas state has seen serious cartel violence in recent years, so check current advice, stick to the centre, and travel the highways by day.
02How to experience it
Walk the centre, cathedral, plazas, and the two Coronel museums, then take the cable car up to La Bufa for sunset and walk down. Tour the Mina El Edén, and if you like the tradition, join a callejoneada, the roving street party behind a donkey and a brass band. Two days; keep an eye on current security guidance for the region.
From the locals
The affection and the caution arrive together. "Zacatecas es chulo de a madre," one Mexican wrote — it's gorgeous — and another: "definitivamente debe ser de las ciudades más hermosas de todo México." But the same thread carries the qualifier honestly: "si no fuera por la inseguridad yo siempre recomendaría Zacatecas de noche" — if it weren't for the insecurity, I'd always recommend it at night.
