01Why it's worth it
From 1953 to 1979 the Army ringed the Bay Area with Nike missile batteries, ready to knock Soviet bombers out of the sky in an attack that never came. Most were stripped and abandoned. On Milagra Ridge above Pacifica, the empty platforms and bunkers of Site SF-51 still sit in the coastal scrub, never having fired a shot, layered now in graffiti and slowly going back to the hillside. It's a short walk up a park ridge to reach them, with ocean views and usually wind and fog, and the mix of paranoid Cold War hardware, spray paint, and quiet is evocative. A small, free, faintly haunted piece of history hiding in a city open space.
02How to experience it
It's in Milagra Ridge (part of the GGNRA) in Pacifica, a short uphill walk from the trailhead. Dress for wind. Combine it with Mori Point or Sweeney Ridge for a full Pacifica-headlands day.
