01Why it's worth it
Baja California stretches down from the US border as a thin, arid finger of desert, mountains, and cactus, edged by the Pacific on one side and the Gulf of California, the Sea of Cortez, on the other, and its magic is where that stark land meets extraordinarily rich water. The Sea of Cortez is one of the most biologically productive seas on Earth: you can snorkel with gentle whale sharks off La Paz, dive the recovered reef of Cabo Pulmo amid clouds of fish and schooling hammerheads, and encounter sea lions, dolphins, mobula rays leaping by the thousand, and the greatest variety of whales anywhere. On the Pacific side, in winter, gray whales complete an epic migration to breeding lagoons like San Ignacio, where mothers famously bring their calves right up to small boats to be touched, one of the most moving wildlife encounters in the world. Between the desert scenery, the island-strewn gulf, the beaches, and this astonishing marine life, Baja is a paradise for lovers of the sea and the wild, reachable by road trip or short flights.
02How to experience it
Match the season and place to the wildlife: gray-whale lagoons on the Pacific (Jan-March) for the touchable whales, and the Sea of Cortez around La Paz and Loreto for whale sharks, diving Cabo Pulmo, and island trips.
